About

I’m David C. Liu, a student at Lynbrook High School in San Jose, California. graduating in 2010. This site serves both as a journal for my thoughts and experiences, usually related to science and technology.

I love computers—I’ve been programming since I was six! I got my start when I wanted to “make my own” computer games (something I eventually did), and it eventually progressed to doing freelance jobs online. Later, I discovered the real challenge in working on new research problems in computer science. Since middle school I’ve been competing with computer science projects in the Synopsys Championship Santa Clara science fair. From there, I’ve gone on to participate in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair three times so far. It’s always a memorable experience.

My research in high school has been in information retrieval—in 9th grade, I created a system to automatically analyze music collections and display them in a 3D collection (”Acoustic Music Similarity Analysis”). The next year, I applied machine learning to make an algorithm that improves content-based image retrieval. My next project was to approach the image retrieval problem from a different perspective: understanding images by classifying their content (e.g. buildings, people, trees).

Other activities I’m involved in:

  • I’m co-president of the Lynbrook Robotics Team, one of the largest clubs on campus.
  • I founded the Lynbrook Computer Science Club as for students to discuss and participate in computer science competitions such as USA Computing Olympiad (USACO), American Computer Science League (ACSL), and the CML Computer Science contest.
  • I compete in Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), where I’ve won second place nationally in Internet Application Programming, and state champion in Cybersecurity.
